The Hamilton County Commissioners are closely monitoring House Bill 1001, legislation introduced at the Statehouse aimed at addressing Indiana’s growing shortage of affordable housing.
The Commissioners have issued the following statement regarding the proposal and its potential impacts on local communities:
We are gravely concerned about the significant impact House Bill 1001 will have on Indiana’s communities.
By preempting local planning and zoning authority, this legislation undermines the ability of local governments to shape the growth and development of their neighborhoods according to the unique needs of their residents. Local officials are best positioned to evaluate land use, manage infrastructure, and protect community housing interests.
House Bill 1001 strips away these critical decision-making powers, creating uncertainty for businesses and homeowners alike.
Centralized, one-size-fits-all mandates ignore the diverse character and challenges of Indiana’s counties, cities, and towns. This bill threatens to erode public input and local accountability, reducing the opportunity for residents to have a voice in the future of their communities.
We urge lawmakers to reconsider HB 1001 and prioritize local control, thoughtful planning, and meaningful public engagement. Indiana’s strength lies in its communities – their distinctive identities and the empowered local leaders who know them best.
Let’s protect that by respecting local autonomy and opposing unnecessary state preemption.
