Brebeuf Jesuit held University scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and the Braves pulled away for a 58-45 win over the Trailblazers Tuesday night.
University had battled back from a 12-point second quarter deficit to take a third quarter lead at 32-31 when Blake Gray scored off a Faisal Mohamud steal. The Blazers had a chance to add to their lead but a turnover led to a Brebeuf layin. After another Brebeuf basket, Gray hit a three pointer to tie the game at 35 with 1:42 remaining in the third.
Gray picked up his fourth foul just six seconds later and the Braves were up 37-35 after making both foul shots and never trailed again. University was within 39-37 at the end of the third quarter after a steal and layin by Mohamud. Josh McGee picked up his fourth foul seconds into the fourth quarter.
With two of their starting guards on the bench in foul trouble, University watched Brebeuf slowly build their lead to 49-37 before Josh Henderson converted a three point play with 2:58 left in the game. A Henderson three pointer got the Blazers within 51-43 with 2:25 left and Brebeuf put the game away at the foul line.
The 45 points scored was University’s lowest output of the season and only the fourth time the Trailblazers scored less than 77 points.
Henderson led University with 14 points while Gray had 10.
The teams each made 18 field goals, but the Braves were 17 of 22 at the charity stripe, while University was just five of six.
University falls to 7-3 on the season and hosts Scecina Thursday evening at The U Center. Brebeuf is 5-3. The Braves were led by 17 points from Austin Ford.
