WESTFIELD – The Westfield girls basketball team beat Fishers 48-40 Friday, Nov. 21 at the Shamrocks’ CSI Gymnasium in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener for both teams.
Westfield led 10-4 after the first quarter. Freshman Lillian Clark led the way with two 3-pointers. The Rocks expanded on their lead in the second quarter, eventually taking a 29-15 halftime lead. Clark added eight more points. MaKayla Hatcher scored six points in that period.
“We want out kids to play free and we want them to have the freedom, if they’re in the gym getting shots up and we know that they’re a shooter, we want them to have the freedom to shoot,” said Westfield coach Kelsey Steele. “Lillian’s one of the hardest workers I’ve seen, and so when she catches it and she’s open, we want her to shoot the basketball every time.”
The Shamrocks enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 34-15 early in the third quarter; Ellie Wheeler began the third quarter with a triple and basket off a steal.
Fishers’ Reagan Reiff was a spark for the Tigers, draining back-to-back triples to cut the lead to 34-21. Fishers made a dent in Westfield’s lead during the third, but the Rocks led 41-28 at the end of the period after freshman Gabby Bassett made a layin; she drilled a 3-pointer earlier.
A 3 from Ella Burleson and basket from Natalie Thomas got the Tigers within 41-33 midway through the fourth. But Clark hit her fourth triple of the game with under 2:30 left and the Rocks held on from there.
Clark finished the game with 16 points. Hatcher finished with 11 and Bassett scored 10. Thomas led Fishers with 14 points, followed by Reiff and Burleson with 11 points each.
“We need to find a way to play with some defensive intensity consistently,” said Tigers coach Lauren Votaw. “And to Westfield’s credit, they shot the ball very well. They moved the ball very well and that just made it really hard for us defensively.”
The Shamrocks are 4-2 and host Class 4A No. 6 Pike tonight. Fishers is 3-3 and hosts Zionsville tonight in another HCC contest.
