FISHERS – The Hamilton Southeastern girls wrestling team won its first dual match of the season Wednesday, beating North Central 60-21 in a home meet.
The Royals claimed 10 matches, either by forfeit or by fall. Seniors Fanta Sall (at 235 pounds) and Joice Nguti (at 125) were among those who got pins; they are among the five seniors competing for Southeastern.
“So far, it’s been really good,” said HSE coach Creston Gallup. “Joyce Nguti is brand new this year. Katherine, it’s her second year, first year on varsity. Everyone’s learning in the process.”
The Royals have some decent young wrestlers as well. Freshman Leighton Becker won her match at 130 pounds, while Norah Tolbert battled in the 115-pound match before dropping a 22-16 decision.
Other winners for the Royals included sophomore Anjali Patel at 105, senior Lindsey Lannen at 120 and junior Savannah Scott at 135.
Southeastern was coming off a seventh-place finish at the New Palestine Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Royals are back in action this Saturday, competing at the Purdue Polytechnic Tournament. Southeastern then travels to Carmel next Wednesday for a dual meet against the Greyhounds.
“They have a fairly new team too, but they have quite a few girls and they placed really well at the tournament they wrestled this past weekend,” said Gallup.
