Hamilton County soccer teams claimed three of the six state championships this season, so it’s no surprise that there are several honorees from the county on the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association’s All-State teams.
That includes the awards for Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year. Local teams swept those awards: Carmel’s Quinn Wu was named the boys Player of the Year, while the Greyhounds’ Shane Schmidt was named the boys Coach of the Year.
Meanwhile, Hamilton Southeastern’s Sloane May was named the girls Player of the Year, while the Royals’ Greg Davidson was named the girls Coach of the Year.
Fun and festive
Schmidt spoke to the Reporter while preparing for the Carmel team’s end-of-season banquet. “They’ve always been fun and festive and everything else, but this year’s obviously a little bit different,” he said.
The longtime coach was modest about receiving the Coach of the Year award, saying he is “a beneficiary of how good our team was and how they performed.”
“It’s a team effort and I truly appreciate what the boys did and the coaching staff does on a daily basis,” said Schmidt. “This is as much their award as mine.”
As for Wu, Schmidt said that the senior “was by far, in every game, the best player on the field in terms of what we have.”
Wu scored seven goals and dished out seven assists during the season, meaning he was part of 14 of the Greyhounds’ 45 goals the scored this season.
“He’s just fantastic,” said Schmidt. “Well-deserved, to say the least.”
Honored and fulfilling
Davidson also was quick to credit his players for helping him to win the Coach of the Year award. He also won the award in 1998 when he was still coaching at Zionsville.
“I’m always more interested in my players getting the honors and the accolades and the awards,” said Davidson. “Since this was a coach’s vote, I’m super honored that they would honor me with this. It’s very fulfilling, while at the same time, I owe it to my other coaches on my staff and the players that had the season to be able to get awards like this.”
May was a varsity player for the Royals all four years of high school. She started her freshman year before missing several games due to injury. But she came back during her sophomore year – “just came out blazing and made up for lost time and was one of the best players in the state her sophomore year,” said Davidson.
May was an All-American player last year during her junior season and is a front-runner for the Gatorade Player of the Year award. May scored 15 goals and dished out 17 assists during her senior season, leading Southeastern in both categories.
“What an exclamation point on her career after being a three-time First team All-State player,” said Davidson.
