The Sheridan football team kept its sectional championship streak going by winning the Sectional 46 title on Friday, Nov. 7.
The Blackhawks beat Cloverdale 14-7 at Bud Wright Stadium. It’s the 23rd sectional title for Sheridan and the first for new head coach Jake Chesney.
“That senior class, now they’ve won a sectional every year they’ve been in high school,” said Chesney. “That’s pretty impressive.”
After a scoreless first quarter, the Blackhawks broke the ice during the first minute of the second quarter. Alex Cravens blasted 56 yards to the end zone, and Johnny Faupel made the extra-point kick.
The Clovers tied the game seconds later, but Sheridan took the lead for good midway through the third period. Jon Barnes made a 21-yard touchdown run, with Faupel kicking the extra point.
“They were a hard-nosed team,” Chesney said of Cloverdale. “They had a really good scheme against us, caught us off-guard a little bit. We had to make some adjustments to the running game. We knew they had athletes and were a hard nosed team.”
Brody Heck made an interception in the fourth quarter to help keep Sheridan in front. Chesney said his team’s defense was “fantastic.”
“Defensively as a unit, they were great,” said Chesney. “They held them below 100 yards rushing and below 100 passing as well.”
Cravens finished the game with 155 yards rushing.
Sheridan is 8-2 and travels to South Putnam this Friday for the Regional 23 championship.
