After getting behind early, Hamilton Southeastern overcame Homestead to win a Class 6A Sectional 4 semifinal game 24-10 Friday, Oct. 31 at the Spartans’ field.
Homestead took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter after a rushing touchdown and field goal. The Royals got on the board with 1:38 left in the period: Deaken Johnson threw the first of his three touchdown passes, connecting with Kian Kelly for a 23-yard score.
Luke Marchionni hit the extra-point kick, then tied the game midway through the second quarter by booting a 27-yard field goal. Minutes later, Johnson tossed a five-yard TD throw to Karson Kelly for the go-ahead score. Marchionni made that extra-point kick, and Southeastern led 17-10 at halftime.
Johnson and Kian Kelly got together for a huge play to end the third quarter. From the HSE 17, Johnson threw a pass, Kian Kelly caught it and turned it into an 83-yard touchdown. Marchionni made that extra point kick as well.
The Spartans had a drive going to begin the fourth quarter, but it ended when Kyle Jenkins caught an interception at the Royals’ 24. Southeastern clinched the game with five straight Drake Satterfield runs, including a first down, during the Royals’ final drive of the game.
Johnson threw an outstanding game, totaling 341 yards on 18-of-30 passing. Kendrick Pennybaker had the most receptions, with seven catches for 136 yards. Kian Kelly’s four catches gave him 139 yards.
The Royals are 6-4 and play at No. 9 Fishers this Friday for the Sectional 4 championship.
