Fishers got itself back on the winning track Friday, Sept. 26 with a solid win over Avon in a home Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.
The Tigers started fast, jumping out to a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter. Ryan Thembulembu made the first score, punching the ball in from the one-yard line at the 9:23 mark of the opening quarter.
Micah Hillen booted the extra-point kick, then made a 24-yard field goal to finish the period, giving Fishers a 10-0 advantage. The Tigers’ passing game stepped up in the second quarter, as Gage Sturgill connected with Vincent Rozzi for an 11-yard touchdown.
The Orioles scored midway through the period, then made a two-point run. That cut Fishers’ lead to 16-8 and that would be the halftime score.
The Tigers got going again late in the third when Sturgill found Osias Sims for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Hillen’s extra-point kick pushed Fishers ahead 23-8.
Avon scored first in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers held firm, clinching the game when Rozzi caught his second TD pass from Sturgill, a 32-yarder with 2:27 left.
Sturgill had an outstanding game, collecting 255 yards on 14-of-25 passing. Rozzi made five of those catches. Thembulembu totaled 124 yards rushing. Atticus Finley led the tackles with 10, while Emmanuel Cowherd, Graham Imes and Kayden Myers all had eight tackles, including a sack from Imes.
Fishers is 3-1 in the HCC and 4-2 overall. The Tigers play at home this Friday, hosting Franklin Central.
