Sheridan Elementary School’s (SES) biggest, loudest, and most exciting fundraiser of the year took place on Friday, Sept. 12. The Blackhawk Walk is an annual fundraiser that is sponsored by the PTO.
During the week of Sept. 8 to 12, students and staff raise money, both online and the old-school way, to fund all the amazing things the PTO does for SES. The PTO’s motto is, “When teachers bring the hype, the kids bring the energy, [and then] we hit our goal[s].”
After raising money all week, the event ended with a full-on celebration walk Friday afternoon. This walk follows a map through quick and active stations that keep the students moving, laughing, and showing their Blackhawk pride. This year’s goal was to raise $15,000, and students could watch the giant thermometer grow throughout the week as they worked to reach their goal.
The people of SES ultimately outdid themselves, as they raised $23,504, completely surpassing their goal.
“Our SES PTO is incredible and worked extremely hard to prepare for this awesome week!” SES Principal Valerie Roberts said.
As students walked outside and went to the different stations, they also came across Sheridan High School cheerleaders and football players. These student-athletes taught the school song at one of the stations and at another had a football toss-and-kick station.
Some teachers even volunteered to be a part of the “Pie a Teacher” throw. Miss Sweger, Mrs. Ells, and Mrs. Goodson were great sports and took pies to the face all afternoon. The top classes of the fundraiser were Ms. Zola’s, Mrs. Durr’s, and Ms. Mitchell’s classrooms, and the top students were Landen Mars, Maclyn Lyons, and Joanna Meinert.
All of the money raised at the Blackhawk Walk goes straight back to the students, staff, and all of the many different events throughout the year, such as Doughnuts with Grown-ups, Teacher Appreciation Week, Monster Mash, School Carnival, B Buck store, and more.
