Westfield defended its boys wrestling sectional title Saturday, Jan. 31 at Frankfort’s Case Arena.

The Shamrocks fought off Hamilton Southeastern, 221-205 for the team title, their fifth in program history. Westfield led after the semifinals, but the Royals took the lead for a time during the wrestlebacks, which determine who wrestlers for third and fifth place.
The Rocks had four champions, which helped them to score enough points to retain their trophy.
“It was back and forth between the two of us all day long,” said Westfield coach Tom Griffin. The coach said he was “pretty happy” with how the team performed.
Connor Maddox won at 106 pounds in his first action in a month. Maddox is undefeated for the season at 23-0.
“He hadn’t wrestled in about four weeks,” said Griffin. But Maddox quickly got a pin, “so he did what he needed to do,” said Griffin.
Brayden Head was the 113-pound champion, Alic Washburn claimed the 138-pound crown and Graydon Staley won at 150. All three advance to the North Montgomery regional on Saturday, Feb. 7, along with six other Westfield wrestlers that finished in the top four.
The Royals qualified 10 for the regional and also had two champions. Cohen Davis won at 165 pounds, while A.W. VanKirk was the 285-pound winner.
Carmel finished third as a team with 194.5 points. The Greyhounds advanced 12 to North Montgomery, including their two champions: Carlo Federici at 120 and Tyler Elliott at 144.

Fishers was a close fourth, scoring 189 points. The Tigers had three champions out of their nine that qualified for regional. Will Hruskoci won the 132-pound division, Camden Funk was the 190 champion and Julian Burgett claimed the 215-pound title.
Sheridan advanced one wrestler to the regional. Alexander Cravens finished fourth at 165.
