A furious University comeback came up just short Monday night at The U Center as the Trailblazers dropped a 74-73 decision to Indianapolis Washington.
University trailed by 13 points early in the fourth quarter before battling back. The Trailblazers had a chance to tie the game with 3.2 seconds when Josh Henderson was fouled on a rebound attempt. The junior made one of two foul shots before stealing the Washington inbound pass near halfcourt with 2.2 seconds. After a University timeout, Faisal Mohamud got a look at the basket but his three pointer was off the back of the rim.
Henderson finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs, and made 12 of 13 foul shots. Josh McGee had 17 points.
University trailed 58-45 with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter before a three-point play and a steal and layin by Henderson cut the lead to 58-50. After two Washington free throws Blake Gray hit a three pointer. Henderson scored again at the 3:55 mark to cut the lead to 61-55 before Mohamud’s three pointer from the left corner made it 61-58.
The Continentals pushed the lead back to 70-61 with 1:37 left before University made a final push. Henderson made two foul shots and a three pointer from the left corner. After forcing a Washington turnover, McGee scored on a three-point play to cut the lead to 70-69. The Continentals Roosevelt Franklin, who scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half, made two free throws for a three-point lead.
University missed a pair of three pointers before Washington added a foul shot for a 73-69 with 22 seconds left. Henderson came back with a three-point play with 13.9 seconds left to cut the lead to one. Washington split a pair of foul shots with 11.4 seconds left setting the stage for the final sequence.
The Trailblazers got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 20-8 lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. The Continentals used a four-point play and another basket with eight seconds left to cut the lead to 20-14. Washington scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take their first lead at 21-20. University led 31-30 at the break.
The contest went back and forth until the last two minutes of the third quarter with Washington starting a 10-0 run spanning the end of the quarter to take the 58-45 lead.
