The Hamilton Southeastern girls wrestling team won its first-ever team sectional championship Friday, Jan. 2 at the Muncie Central sectional.
The Royals edged out Carmel for the team trophy, scoring 170 points to the Greyhounds’ 164. Both teams also had several wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight classes, which advances them to this Saturday’s regional, also at Muncie Central.
Southeastern had seven girls advance to regional, including three champions. Junior Lilliana Rodriguez claimed the 105-pound class, advancing to the semifinals with a forfeit before winning her next two matches by fall. Rodriguez pinned Blackford sophomore Hannah Jernigan in 56 seconds to win the final.
Senior Lindsey Lannen won the 120-pound division, getting two pins to reach the final, where she beat Cowan senior Emma Jones in a 6-0 decision.
Senior Fanta Sall was HSE’s second champion. She reached the semifinals with a forfeit, then made two quick pins in her next two matches, beating Fishers freshman Isabella Denney with a 49-second fall in the championship match.
Charlotte Dragoo was the runner-up at 100 pounds. Marinelli Rodriguez was third at 115 pounds, then two other Royals wrestlers took fourth: Norah Tolbert at 110 and Kendall White at 155.
The Greyhounds moved six wrestlers out to the regional, including one champion. Senior Daniela Ramirez-Zarate won the 155-pound championship with three pins, including a second-round fall over Eastbrook sophomore Averie Stephenson in the final bout.
Carmel had three wrestlers finish as runners-up: Grace Sharp at 115, Masha Newsome at 125 and Laila Mack at 140. Paisley Lloyd place third at 235 and Tess Self was fourth at 100, joining the others in qualifying for the regional.
Fishers placed eighth as a team with 66 points and qualified three for the regional. Denney’s runner-up finish at 235 made her the Tigers’ leader; she will be joined at regional by Jamariah Patton (third at 130) and Anjali Dhanda (fourth at 135).
Noblesville scored 38 points and had two regional qualifiers. Tiffany Manglona was third at 110 and Azzurra Moretti placed fourth at 105.
