CARMEL – A big play in basketball doesn’t always have to involve scoring.
A steal works well, too. Carmel’s Taylee Fisher came up with a takeaway with 30 seconds left in the Greyhounds’ game with Cathedral, and that helped the Hounds clinch a 47-41 victory on Bill Shepherd Court at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
Carmel had to claw back from a large first-quarter deficit to get the win, which halted a four-game skid.
“I think we were down 9-1, and then I called a timeout,” said Greyhounds coach Jess Darmelio. After that, Carmel came roaring back, cutting the Irish’s lead to 15-13 by the end of the quarter.
“Our kids have proven all year that they don’t give up, they don’t stop,” said Darmelio. “They don’t quit at all. They always keep fighting.”
Cathedral led for the entire second and third quarters, but the Greyhounds never let the Irish’s lead grow beyond five points. Bella Ramsey scored six points in the second, giving her 11 for the first half, which finished with Cathedral ahead 26-22.
Carmel kept it close in the third quarter, getting within 35-33 by the end of the period. Sydney Bonds had four points, while Catherine Bassi opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, her third of the game.
The Greyhounds finally took the lead early in the fourth when Fisher nailed a 3 and put Carmel ahead 37-35. Tatum Triggs tied the game at 37-37 with a jumper.
Then, it was Maddy Wallace time. The sophomore drained a triple and put the Hounds ahead for good, at 40-37. But just in case, Wallace made a floater was up 42-37.
“Both of them [Fisher and Wallace] are very good at anticipating where the ball is, getting their hands in places to get deflections, get steals,” said Darmelio. “And I just think it shows they’re at the right spot at the right time.”
“Defensive effort was definitely what kept us in the game today,” said Wallace. “It was an all-around effort. Communication really stepped up. A really good win for us.”
Carmel led 44-41 with 30 seconds to go. Cathedral had the ball, but Fisher was there to make the steal, then made a free throw with 23.8 seconds left. Wallace finished the game with two free throws 13 seconds later.
Ramsey scored 15 points for the Hounds, while Bassi totaled 12. Wallace scored nine, Fisher had six points and Bonds finished with five.
The Greyhounds are 9-12 and finish the regular season Friday against Ben Davis, then host Class 4A Sectional 8 next week.
