Hamilton Heights is proud to honor Mr. Lawrence “Sonny” Beck as the inaugural Distinguished Alumni honoree.
A 1958 graduate of Jackson Central High School, Mr. Beck has spent his life growing far more than crops – he has cultivated a legacy of leadership, innovation, and service that has shaped agriculture, education, and the Hamilton Heights community.
As CEO of Beck’s Hybrids, Mr. Beck guided the company’s expansion into the largest family‑owned retail seed company in the United States and the third-largest seed brand overall. His influence extends across the agricultural industry, with leadership roles in the American Seed Trade Association, Indiana Crop Improvement Association, and U.S. Grains Council.
Mr. Beck’s commitment to education is equally remarkable. He served 20 years on the Hamilton Heights School Board and continues to impact future generations through his service as a Purdue University Trustee. His distinguished honors include the Sagamore of the Wabash, Indiana Historical Society Living Legend recognition, and an Honorary Doctorate of Agriculture from Purdue University.
A dedicated philanthropist, Mr. Beck is a longtime supporter of youth and education throughout Hamilton County. His service also extends to faith and civic leadership, including a decade as chairman of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Council. His life is a testament to servant leadership, visionary growth, and unwavering commitment to his community. Mr. Beck’s model of excellence is a source of pride for the Hamilton Heights family.
“Sonny Beck exemplifies the values we strive to instill in every Hamilton Heights graduate – leadership, service, and a deep commitment to community,” Heights Superintendent Dr. Derek Arrowood said. “We are honored to recognize his extraordinary legacy as our first Distinguished Alumni honoree.”
The community is invited to celebrate Mr. Beck’s enduring impact at a special ceremony on Friday, Jan. 30 at the Hamilton Heights High School media center. Dinner costs $10 and begins at 6 p.m., followed by the recognition program at 7 p.m. To RSVP for the dinner, contact Mitch Street at mstreet@hhschuskies.org or (317) 984-3551, ext. 1091 by Friday, Jan. 16.
Mr. Beck will also be honored during Winter Homecoming at halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game, where the Huskies will host the Tipton Blue Devils.
This event is proudly presented by the Hamilton Heights Educational Foundation (HHEF), Title Sponsor of the Distinguished Alumni Program.
