Sheridan and Hamilton Heights’ teams each had multiple wrestlers advance out of their respective sectionals on Friday, Jan. 2.
Sheridan competed in the Crawfordsville sectional, where the Blackhawks finished fifth as a team with 109 points.
Sheridan picked up two individual championships. Senior Devyn Pewarski won at 135 pounds, beating Greencastle junior Deasia Tyler by a 16-8 major decision in the final. Pewarski got a pin in the semifinal.
Senior Adrianna Hamersley was the 145-pound champion. After a forfeit, Hamersley won her next two matches by fall, beating Terre Haute North sophomore McKinley Fisher in the championship bout.
Aubrey Koch placed second at 115 pounds, joining the other two at this Saturday’s Kokomo regional.
Four other Blackhawks wrestlers were place winners at the sectional. Ryleigh Hampton (at 120), Ellie Eaton (at 130) and Eva Todd (at 140) all finished fifth, while Gracie Stowers placed sixth at 110.
The Huskies hosted their own sectional, scoring 79 points to take seventh place. Heights had four wrestlers finish in the top four, sending all of them to this Saturday’s Kokomo regional.
Two Huskies were runners-up in their divisions: Isabella Bailey at 145 pounds and Natalie Head at 170 pounds. Heights also had two fourth-place finishers: Raelynn Trent at 135 and Amaelia Cordero Ballinger at 155.
Maya Totleben finished fifth at 130 pounds.
“I’m super excited. I’m proud of them,” said Heights coach Markaela Pugh. “They wrestled hard. They fought. Had some calls maybe not go our way, but we still got it done and we still got four out of six going on, so I’m happy.”
