University’s boys overcame a 10-point fourth deficit and went on to pick up a 67-63 overtime win over Scecina Thursday night at The U Center.
The Trailblazers outscored the Crusaders 15-11 in the four-minute overtime behind a pair of Blake Gray three pointers and five points from Cooper Cammack.
Scecina scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to take a 46-36 lead. Faisal Mohamud hit a three pointer with 6:07 left to start the comeback. Scecina scored on a rebound basket with 5:09 left but University scored the next 11 points. Josh Henderson made a basket before Gray hit a three pointer. Henderson pulled University with in two off a Cammack assist. Henderson had a big defensive play with a blocked shot that led to Mohamud knotting the score at 48 with 3:16 left.
Josh McGee gave University their first lead of the night at 50-48 with 2:17 left. After the Crusaders split a pair of free throws, Henderson put the Blazers up 52-49 with 1:15 left. Jake Marshall came off the bench for Scecina to make a three pointer from the right wing that tied the game at 52 with 1:02 left. University held for the last shot but it was off the mark.
Mohaumud opened the overtime with a basket before Scecina’s Bryce Mathis split two foul shots and had a steal layup to give the Cursaders their last lead at 55-54. Henderson’s foul shot tied the game at 55 before Gray made back-to-back three pointers for a 61-55 lead with 1:22 left. Scecina kept battling back, Adrian Hill making a three pointer before Cammack scored. After Mathis made a three to cut the lead to 63-61, Henderson fed the ball to Cammack for two. Hill scored again to make it 65-63. University’s defense forced a turnover and missed three pointer and Mohamud and Cammack iced the game with free throws.
The Blazers struggled to generate offense through three quarters, turning the ball over 14 times and scoring just 36 points. The Blazers scored 31 points in the last ten minuites of the game and committed only three turnovers. University shot 11 of 14 in the fourth quarter and overtime, including four of six on three pointers.
Henderson led four Trailblazers in double figures with 17 points. Gray and Mohamud had 15 each while Cammack scored 12. McGee had eight rebounds.
Mathis had a game-high 27 for Scecina.
University is now 8-3 on the season. Scecina is 6-3.
University plays again on Saturday at Covenant Christian as the nightcap of a girls-boys doubleheader.
