University’s boys won a pair of games Monday at the Bill Hawkins Classic at Bethesda Christian to advance to Tuesday night’s championship game.
The Trailblazers opened play with a 77-59 win over Indianapolis Metropolitan before blitzing Faith Christian 81-41 in the semifinals.
University trailed for only 35 seconds against Metropolitan and led by double digits for most of the second half but could not put away the Pumas until an 8-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter. Two baskets by Josh Henderson, one by Josh McGee and another by Cooper Cammack gave University a 69-55 lead with 2:32 remaining. The Trailblazers held Metropolitan scoreless for more than five minutes to put the game away.
Blake Gray stuffed the stat sheet, scoring a career-high 27 points. The senior made 11 of 16 shots, including 4 of 7 on three pointers. He added seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Henderson had 20 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. McGee was also in double figures with 13.
The Trailblazers took control of the game early against Faith Christian, scoring the last 17 points of the first quarter. University led 25-4 after the opening period. Henderson’s 10 points led six Blazers who scored in the first quarter. University led 8-4 midway through the quarter before breaking the game open.
The Blazers led 48-22 at halftime before opening up the 35-point lead for a running clock with 3:35 left in the third quarter at 65-28.
Four Trailblazers reached double figures, led by Henderson who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Gray had 14 points with Faisal Mohamud and Peter Morales scoring 13 each.
University has a 5-2 record and will play host Bethesda Christian Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. for the championship.
