University’s girls got off to a hot start Thursday evening but were unable to sustain it, dropping a 69-40 decision to Bishop Chatard.
The Trailblazers used a pair of three pointers from the right corner by Leah Norvell and a triple from the left corner by Nyla Blanding to jump out to a 9-4 lead with 5:45 left in the opening quarter. The Trojans turned up the defense and held University scoreless for the rest of the quarter to take a 19-9 lead.
A rebound basket by Gabby Culp and a bucket by Julie Montiel pulled the Blazers within 19-13, but Chatard scored the next seven points. University got withing 30-23 on a three-point play by Culp, but Chatard pulled away to a 34-24 halftime lead. The Trojans put the game away with a 10-2 run to open the second half.
Norvell led University with 16 points. Culp had 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Mack Feeney blocked six shots.
University falls to 4-6 on the season. The Trailblazers are next in action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Mooresville Christian. Tip time is set for 4 p.m.
