University rallied from an 18-4 deficit to pick up their first win of the season with a 50-38 triumph at Danville.
The Trailblazers cut the deficit to 25-23 at halftime and took the lead for good midway through the third quarter. University held Danville scoreless for the last 3:40 of the game and scored the last 10 points to pull away for the win.
Gabby Culp had 14 points to lead the Blazers. Sydney Culp had 12, including seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter. Leah Norvell also had 12 points with Brooke Henderson coming off the bench to score eight.
University’s freshmen made big plays to ignite the comeback. Henderson rebounded a missed free throw for a bucket before Nyla Blanding hit a corner three to cut the lead to 18-10. After a Danville basket Norvell made two foul shots to cut the lead to 20-12 at the quarter break.
After Danville’s fifth three pointer of the game to open the second quarter, Henderson and Gaby Culp had rebound baskets. Gabby Culp added a three and Sydney Culp a basket to get University within 23-21. The Blazers tied the game at 23 on a Gabby Culp bucket off a Mack Feeney feed before Danville made two foul shots for a 25-23 lead at the break.
Two Sydney Culp foul shots and a Norvell basket gave University their first lead at 27-25. After Danville tied the game, Norvell made two foul shots to put the Blazers up for good with 4:54 left in the third. A Norvell score and another Feeney feed to Gabby Culp made the lead 33-28. Henderson scored off another Feeney assist and the Blazers led 35-32 after the third quarter.
Danville got within 40-38 before Norvell found Henderson alone under the basket and Gabby Culp scored for a 44-38 advantage. The Blazers closed out the game at the foul line.
Norvell added a team high eight rebounds to go with five assists and two steals while committing just one turnover running the offense. Gabby and Sydney Culp each had six rebounds with Sydney adding three steals and Gabby two. Feeney had a team-high eight assists and added five rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.
University is 1-2 on the season and travels back to Hendricks County Thursday to take on the Tri-West Bruins at 7 p.m.
