Hamilton Heights senior Macie Smith has officially signed her letter of intent to play volleyball for West Virginia University (WVU), a member of the Big 12 Conference and a Division I NCAA institution. She is the daughter of Kelly and Wes Smith.
Smith’s athletic career at Hamilton Heights has been marked by versatility and excellence. A standout on both the volleyball court and the track, she earned All-Conference and All-County honors the past three seasons and was named to the All-District team her sophomore year in volleyball. On the track she secured All-Conference recognition during her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Her decision to attend WVU was shaped by a combination of factors: the university’s scenic Appalachian setting, a strong academic pathway in radiologic technology, and a coaching staff that made her feel at home.
“I want to be a radiology technologist,” Smith shared, pointing to WVU’s School of Medicine’s Department of Radiology, which offers cutting-edge diagnostic imaging education and research opportunities.
Smith has been passionate about volleyball for over seven years, honing her skills through relentless practice and by studying elite players. She credits her sister as a major influence in her development on and off the court as someone who inspired her to push harder and dream bigger.
WVU’s volleyball program is on the rise under Head Coach Jen Greeny, who recently led the Mountaineers to their first Big 12 win of the season and a record-breaking 11–0 start. Smith joins a team that is building momentum and redefining its legacy in one of the nation’s most competitive conferences.
“Macie’s success on the volleyball court is anchored in an advanced foundational understanding of the game,” said Steve Ward, Hamilton Heights Varsity Volleyball Head Coach. “Not only is she currently ranked No. 5 in the State of Indiana in kills, but she also holds the title of No. 1 in kills in the Conference. For the past four years, Macie has been one of the critical success factors of our program, and what is perhaps even more impressive than her stats on the court, is the role she has risen to play as a leader and a Captain of the team. I look forward to watching her play at West Virginia, and I am sure she will make her mark on that program just as she did here at Heights.”
“Macie has been a major contributor to the recent success of the volleyball team,” added Kurt Ogden, Hamilton Heights High School Athletic Director. “Her athletic ability is absolutely off the charts, and this is evident not only in volleyball but track and field. She has solidified her name in the volleyball record books for both career kills and digs and that’s not an easy task to do. West Virginia is getting one of our finest student/athletes and we are excited for Macie to have the opportunity to join an outstanding volleyball university and contribute to their success.”
