Hamilton Southeastern recovered from a slow start to easily win its season-opener Thursday at Lawrence North.
The Class 4A No. 6 Royals beat the defending 4A state champion Wildcats 57-26. Lawrence North led 8-0 to begin the game, but Southeastern blasted off after that, going on a 20-2 run that extended into the second quarter. The Royals led 29-13 at halftime, with Antonette Green hitting a half-court shot at the buzzer.
Southeastern continued to dominate in the third quarter, holding the Wildcats scoreless during the first five minutes of the period. The Royals outscored LN 25-9 in the third for a 54-23 lead.
Sophomore Piper Brinley led the scoring with 15 points, including five 3-pointers. Kayla Stidham (13 points) and Kennedy Holman (11 points) joined her in double figures. Holman collected seven rebounds, followed by Stidham with six and Abby Orme with five.
Stidham dished out five assists, while Holman provided four assists. Brinley and Stidham both made four steals.
The Royals go back on the road Saturday for a game at Ben Davis.
