The Guerin Catholic boys basketball team won its season-opener on Wednesday, beating Cardinal Ritter 62-53 in a girls/boys doubleheader at the Raiders’ gym.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start, leading 22-11 after the first quarter. Jake Grissom dominated the period with 12 points. Ritter came roaring back in the second quarter, outscoring GC 19-9 and cutting Guerin Catholic’s lead to 31-30 by halftime.
But the Golden Eagles held on, outscoring the Raiders in each quarter of the second half. Guerin Catholic led 51-48 after three quarters, with Grissom adding seven points and Andrew Riethman scoring five. The Golden Eagles cruised through the fourth quarter, with Carter Murans scoring six points.
Grissom finished with 20 points, while Murans scored 18. Hayden Rogers collected seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Riethman had five rebounds and four assists, while Zachary Tansel handed out four assists.
Guerin Catholic goes back on the road Saturday to play at Tindley.
