University’s three game winning streak came to an end Tuesday as the Trailblazers dropped a 51-31 contest to Class 3A No. 3 Roncalli at The U Center.
University led early in the game and were within three points late in the first half before the Royals pulled away from a seven point halftime lead to win their fourth straight game to open the season.
The Trailblazers held an early 4-1 lead on baskets by Sydney Culp and Gabby Culp before Roncalli scored nine straight points to take a 10-4 lead. Gabby Culp made two foul shots and found Brooke Henderson on the block for an easy bucket to cut the lead to 10-8. A basket with five seconds left gave Roncalli a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Roncalli pushed the lead out to 19-10 midway through the second period before the Trailblazers battled back. Two free throws by Leah Norvell and a pair of three pointers by freshman Nyla Blanding pulled the Blazers within 21-18 with two minutes left in the half. The Royals scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 25-18 halftime lead.
Four third-quarter points by Gabby Culp had University within 29-22 late in the period before ten straight Roncalli points put the game out of reach.
Gabby Culp had nine points to lead University. Blanding added eight points and Sydney Culp six. Norvell and Henderson had four each to round out the Trailblazer scoring.
