The Carmel girls basketball team got its first win of the season in thrilling fashion Saturday, Nov. 8.
The Greyhounds won 71-70 in overtime at Evansville Central. Layla Abdo made a 3-pointer during the final minute of overtime to seal the victory for Carmel, its first under new head coach Jessica Darmelio.
It was a tight game for the entire 36 minutes. The Bears led 23-19 after one quarter and 31-28 at halftime. Maddy Wallace kept the Hounds in it with 12 first-half points.
Evansville Central led 47-42 after three quarters, but Carmel outscored the Bears 21-16 in the fourth to force overtime. Wallace scored 14 points in the third and fourth periods, while Abdo nailed two 3s in OT, including her game-winner.
Wallace finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Abdo scored 14 points; both she and Wallace made four 3s. Bella Ramsey added 12 points and Taylee Fisher scored nine.
Carmel is 1-1 and hosts Crispus Attucks Friday in its home opener.
