Hamilton County Historical Society to host annual Haunted Jail

Ghosts, legends, and a chilling step back in time are waiting behind the bars of the historic Hamilton County Jail. The Hamilton County Historical Society (HCHS) is once again opening the doors to one of the county’s most iconic landmarks for its much-anticipated Haunted Jail experience this October.
Each fall, the museum transforms the former jail into a spine-tingling attraction filled with eerie encounters, ghostly tales, and the kind of atmosphere that only a real 19th-century lockup can provide. Guests will wander dimly lit corridors, peek into old cells, and perhaps even brush shoulders with the spirits rumored to linger within the stone walls.
“This event is more than just a haunted house – it’s a way to keep history alive in a fun, memorable way,” said organizers with HCHS. “The jail itself holds so many stories, and during Haunted Jail, those stories come alive.”
The Haunted Jail has become a community tradition, drawing thrill-seekers, history lovers, and curious first-timers alike. This is a free event. Donations are always welcome and proceeds from the event support the Historical Society’s mission to preserve and share Hamilton County’s rich heritage, from rotating and permanent exhibits in the old sheriff’s residence to educational programming throughout the year.
The experience is designed to entertain but also to highlight the unique character of the historic jail, built in the late 1800s and still standing strong as a testament to Noblesville’s past.
The Haunted Jail will run from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4. This year, a friendlier daylight time has been added for younger or those with special sensory requirements.
So, whether you’re in it for the scares, the history, or a little of both, the Haunted Jail promises an unforgettable experience inside one of Hamilton County’s most storied landmarks.
