CARMEL – It took an extra day, but the Carmel girls soccer team is a regional champion.
The Class 3A No. 3 Greyhounds scored two goals in the second half to beat No. 18 East Central 2-0 on Monday at Brian Murray Stadium and reclaim the regional trophy they last won in 2022. The regional game began on Saturday, Oct. 18, but only 20 minutes were played before the game was postponed due to storms.
Neither team scored in the first half and the first 26 minutes of the second half were scoreless as well. The game was beginning to look reminiscent of last year’s regional bout between Carmel and East Central, which the Trojans won in penalty kicks.
But the Greyhounds changed the narrative late in the second half. Carmel broke through with a goal in the 67th minute: Kate Klinginsmith sent a corner kick into the goal box, and Elsie Flanders eventually put it in the net.
“I felt like we were knocking on the door for so long and it just felt good to put one away finally and get that pressure off your back,” said Klinginsmith.
“It helped them loosen up a little bit,” said Carmel coach John Simmonds. “I think every five minutes into the second half, it was still tied. I think they got a little bit nervy. That goal that Elsie had on the corner kick broke the ice for us and led to the second goal by Adalyn.”
That would be Adalyn Cameron, who scored her 39th goal of the season with under six minutes left. Emma Ehret sent a perfect cross from the right side to the center of the field, and Cameron kicked it in.
Carmel now has 18 regional titles in program history, the third-most of any school across Indiana. Evansville Memorial is second with 19, and Center Grove moved into the top spot Saturday, Oct. 18 by winning its 20th regional title.
The Greyhounds will play Center Grove at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday at Martinsville for the Class 3A south semi-state. The 3A north semi-state takes place at 3 p.m. at Chesterton between Hamilton Southeastern (see related story) and Crown Point. The winners advance to the state finals.
