The Sheridan volleyball team made history on Saturday, Oct. 18, winning its first-ever sectional championship.
The Blackhawks won Class 2A Sectional 39 at Tipton by outlasting their opponents in two five-set matches. First, Sheridan got past Frankton 25-16, 22-25, 18-25, 25-12, 15-10 in its morning semifinal match.
Lainey Mendenhall led the Blackhawks’ offense with 16 kills. She was followed by Lilli Thompson’s seven kills, Kelsie Hagan with six, Amiyah Doss with four and Beth Adams with four. Adria Jump dished out 36 assists. Eva Todd served five aces in 17 service points, while Jump had 10 service points and three aces. Thompson hit three aces and Adams served two.
Meredith Krupp collected 36 digs to lead the defense. Mendenhall scooped up 21 and Jump made 20 digs. Todd collected 12 digs and Adams had seven. Thompson made two solo blocks, Mendenhall had one solo block and one block assist, Hagan had one block and Doss made one block assist.
In the championship match, Sheridan fought off Lapel in another five-set match. The set scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-13.
Mendenhall dominated the offense with 26 kills. Jump put down nine kills, followed by Adams with six, Doss with four and Thompson with four. Jump dished out 38 assists and had 16 service points and three aces, while Todd had 17 service points. Hagan, Krupp and Thompson all served one ace.
Krupp scooped up another 36 digs in the championship match. Jump was right behind her with 34 digs. Mendenhall collected 20, Hagan had 15, Todd scooped up eight and Adams made seven digs. Doss totaled one solo block and four block assists, Adams had two block assist, Jump added one solo and one block assist and Hagan made one block assist.
Sheridan is 19-10 for the season. The Blackhawks travel to Twin Lakes this Saturday to play Benton Central for the regional championship.
