The Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers volleyball teams both won opening-round matches Thursday in Class 4A Sectional 8 at Zionsville.
The No. 3-ranked Royals swept the host Eagles 25-23, 25-13, 25-19 in the first match of the evening. The Tigers got past Noblesville in a five-set match, winning 16-25, 25-20, 12-25, 25-19, 15-9.
The match was also notable in that a Fishers player reached a milestone: Ava Tester cleared 1,000 career assists during the Tigers’ victory.
Play at Zionsville continues on Saturday. The semifinals start at 11 a.m., with Southeastern taking on No. 2 Westfield in the first match. Carmel plays Fishers in the second match. Winners advance to the championship, which begins at 6 p.m.

Guerin Catholic’s successful season came to an end on Thursday, as the No. 6 Golden Eagles lost to No. 8 Tri-West in four sets at Class 3A Sectional 25 at Frankfort.
Guerin Catholic won the first set before the Bruins took the next three; the final scored was 17-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18. The Golden Eagles finished their season with a 20-8 record.

Sheridan swept Elwood to begin play at Class 2A Sectional 39 at Tipton.
The Blackhawks won 25-15, 25-20, 25-13. Lainey Mendenhall led the offense with 19 kills, followed by Beth Adams with four. Kelsie Hagan, Lilli Thompson and Emily Will all put down two kills. Adria Jump dished out 28 assists.
Jump totaled 13 service points, including nine aces, with Thompson collecting 15 service points, serving two aces. Mendenhall hit three aces and Meredith Krupp served two.
Krupp led the defense with 14 digs, followed by Jump with 12 and Mendenhall with 11. Eva Todd scooped up six digs and Adams had five. Jump also made one solo block.
Sheridan plays Frankton in Saturday’s sectional semifinals, with the match starting at 11 a.m.

Class 2A Sectional 42 host University swept Riverside 25-9, 25-3, 25-9 in its first-round match Thursday.
Brooke Henderson hit 10 kills for the Trailblazers. Olivia Kim served seven aces to go with five kills, while Addy Pritchard put down five kills. Nyla Blanding dished out 30 assists.
University plays Cardinal Ritter in the first semifinal, which takes place 11 a.m. Saturday.
