Sheridan clinched second place in the Hoosier Heartland Conference Friday, Oct. 17 with a 20-7 victory over Carroll at Bud Wright Stadium.
The Blackhawks led for almost the entire 48 minutes. Hayden Alexander took an opening kickoff return 76 yards for Sheridan’s first touchdown just 10 seconds into the game. After that, Sheridan steadily built its lead, also scoring a TD in the second and third quarters.
Brock Hagan punched the ball in from the one-yard line during the second quarter, giving the Hawks a 12-0 halftime lead. Alex Cravens took a 60-yard sprint into the end zone midway through the third period, and Hagan made a two-point run to get Sheridan up 20-0. The Cougars scored their touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“The guys really answered the call,” said Blackhawks coach Jake Chesney. The coach said his team was aware of how disciplined Carroll is and the type of offense it runs, “so we tweaked the defense a little bit, even tried some new things offensively and it worked out.”
“The guys were committed to it,” said Chesney. “They played their butts off. We won the line of scrimmage. We made the big plays in the big moments.”
Cravens totaled 200 yards rushing on 42 carries.
Sheridan finished HHC play with a 5-1 record. Eastern also completed conference play 5-1; the Comets won the conference championship based on their win over the Hawks on Oct. 10.
Sheridan is 6-2 overall. The Blackhawks are off this week, then play Oct. 31 at Clinton Prairie in the semifinals of Class 1A Sectional 46.
