CARMEL – The Carmel girls soccer team returned to the regional championship game Thursday with a 6-1 victory over Avon in the semifinal at Brian Murray Stadium.
The Class 3A No. 3 Greyhounds scored during the fifth minute of the game. Avon’s goalkeeper deflected a shot by Adalyn Cameron, but Elsie Flanders was there to tap the ball in.
“We were kind of nervous at the beginning of the game, then we finally got into a rhythm where we started stringing some passes together, got them pretty stretched out and then they came a little bit easy,” said Carmel coach John Simmonds.
Cameron scored in the 20th minute by putting in a five-foot kick. After that, the game turned into the Olivia Brigade – three different Carmel players scored the Greyhounds’ next three goals and they were all named Olivia.
Olivia Evans kicked a rebound shot into the net with 4:27 left in the half, giving the Hounds a 3-0 lead. The Orioles’ Ella Hastings made a 14-foot kick to score Avon’s lone goal during the 44th minute, but Carmel answered quickly, scoring again less than five minutes later. Olivia Ade finished a run from Flanders to put the Hounds up 4-1.
Olivia Joyce kicked in Carmel’s fifth goal with 24:03 remaining, then Cameron picked up her second goal with a 20-foot lob that sailed just under the crossbar. The Greyhounds totaled 20 shots on goal for the game.
“It’s good for our team to know that we can get goals other than Adalyn,” said Simmonds. “Obviously, she’s a fantastic player. She scored her 39th goal. She’s now second all-time in Carmel girls soccer history with goals for a season. But when we see that we can get goals elsewhere, it makes us feel better about the next game coming up.”
The Greyhounds host No. 18 East Central at 4:30 p.m. Saturday for the regional championship. It will be a rematch of last year’s regional final, one where the Trojans upset Carmel in penalty kicks.
The Greyhounds are 17-2-1 for the season.
