Gov. Mike Braun on Tuesday said he’s satisfied with a recent audit of the IEDC but he’s OK with lawmakers launching their own review.

The governor’s comments follow calls by Democrats for a legislative probe of the Indiana Economic Development Corp. and for new transparency legislation surrounding IEDC donors. Those calls followed the release on Thursday of a forensic audit which found numerous instances of conflicts of interest involving IEDC board members or employees. The audit also found donors to the related Indiana Economic Development Foundation often received incentives or grants from the state.
Braun said he’s happy with the results of the audit. He said his administration is already working on fixes but he would be “quite alright” with the legislature making its own changes in its oversight capacity if they feel it is necessary. He said he doesn’t believe auditors stopped short.
“If [Democrats have] got something they think that needs to be gleaned other than what was in it, I’d like to hear it rather than just maybe a statement,” he said. “I mean, we hired a reputable company. They took a long time to arrive at the results. We don’t see where they pulled any punches. They just laid it out. We were already making fixes even before the audit. We will take every recommendation there and weave it in to how we structure our approach down the road.”
Braun already has replaced the entire IEDC board and plans to wind down the Indiana Economic Development Foundation. His office said Braun does not plan to replace the foundation with anything substantially similar. In addition, the full IEDC board now must take votes rather than simply delegating the task to its committees.
