Fishers played solid in the middle quarters of its home game with Zionsville, and that helped the Tigers surge past the Eagles 28-18 on Friday, Oct. 17 for a Hoosier Crossroads Conference victory.
Zionsville led 10-0 after scoring a first-quarter touchdown and making a field goal early in the second period. After that, it was all Tigers as they scored four consecutive touchdowns.
Gage Sturgill threw a 74-yard TD pass to Vincent Rozzi early in the second to get Fishers on the board. Then with under two minutes to go until halftime, DJ Radford made a nine-yard scoring run to push the Tigers ahead 14-10.
Fishers kept the momentum going in the third quarter. Sturgill and Rozzi connected for two more touchdown passes, the first from eight yards and the second from 50 yards. The Tigers led 28-10 going into the fourth; Zionsville scored on a short run and two-point conversion with five minutes left in the game, but Fishers held on for the win.
Micah Hillen made all four extra-point kicks.
Sturgill had an outstanding game, completing 13 of 16 pass attempts for 265 yards. Rozzi collected eight receptions for 185 yards. Sturgill also led the rushing with 108 yards.
Tyler Maynard led the defense with 10 tackles, five for a loss, and made three sacks. Emmanuel Cowherd had four tackles for a loss and one sack, with Owen Stout getting a sack as well.
Fishers finished conference play 5-2 and is 6-3 overall. The Tigers are off this week, then play at Noblesville on Oct. 31 in the semifinals of Class 6A Sectional 4.
