Crawfordsville Athenians (5-5) at No. 16 Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles (6-4)
The Golden Eagles and Athenians have met just once. Guerin won that 2018 sectional matchup, 49-19.
Head coach Brad Clark is 12-28 in his fourth season.
Crawfordsville blanked Speedway at home in last week’s first round, 35-0. The Athenians have won three of the last four.
The trio of Diego Velasco (475 yards), Maddox Ronco (423) and Mason McCarty (422) have combined for 238 carries and 1,320 yards (5.5 per rush), along with 19 touchdowns.
McCarty has also thrown for 653 yards and seven TDs, 159 and two scores to Landon Gerold.
Daniel Surface is the leader on defense with 111 tackles, four caused fumbles and one recovery. Cohen McClamroch and Jaxon Wireman each have three interceptions, while Logan Lowe and Tyler Hinton both have recovered two fumbles.
Tom Dilley is in his 12th year at Guerin with a 76-55 mark. GC is looking to advance to its third sectional championship in four years, but hasn’t won a sectional since 2014, Dilley’s first season at Guerin. The Golden Eagles are on a three-game win streak heading into tomorrow night’s semifinal.
Guerin Catholic opened the sectional last week with a 36-21 win at Hamilton Heights. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 17-0 lead and led 36-14 at the half on their way to the win.
Senior quarterback Quentin Klee has thrown for 2,101 yards on 165 of 278 for 59.4 percent with 17 touchdown passes and just five interceptions. Klee has also ran for 172 yards and a score.
Senior running back Jack Linden leads Guerin in rushing with 591 yards on 122 runs with eight touchdowns. Linden is also dangerous in the flats with 29 catches, good for third on the team, for 335 yards and three TDs.
Junior Isaiah Lewis tops a balanced receiving corps with 665 yards on 49 receptions. Lewis is tied for the lead with sophomore Kolbe Klee with four touchdowns, while Kolbe has caught 37 for 438. Aidan Horn has 25 grabs for 325 and Trevor Macey 15 for 252, each scoring twice.
Sophomore Erik Sorensen paces the defense with 78 tackles. Classmate Jack Wilson has 64 stops, with senior James Moody right behind with 63 and two interceptions. Seniors Nolan Ratcliff (two interceptions) and JB Ford (two fumble recoveries, interception) lead a solid secondary.
No. 3 Cascade Cadets (10-0) at No. 8 Tri-West Bruins (7-3)
The Cadets road trips 17 miles north from Clayton to Lizton to face the Bruins. This is the 29th meeting between the two, with Tri-West holding a commanding 25-3 record, including 5-0 in the playoffs. They met in last year’s sectional semifinal, won by the Bruins (37-35).
Cascade is one of the highest scoring teams in the state at 58.4 per game. The Cadets did just that over Indianapolis Washington last week in the sectional opener, 58-0. Their lowest output was in Week 2 at Danville (41-25), otherwise Cascade hasn’t been challenged, winning by an average of 49.8 per contest.
Head coach Connon Simmons is 38-26 in his sixth year.
The Cadets were 7-0 in the Monon Conference, taking down Southmont, Western Boone, Greencastle, North Putnam, Crawfordsville, North Montgomery and Frankfort.
Brady Trebley now has 1,612 yards, 24 touchdown passes and zero interceptions. Dayton Mink has 603 rushing yards and 14 scores, while Toby Savini has 10 TDs (2 last week) and 542 yards.
The Bruins won at West Vigo last week, 35-14.
Tri-West finished second to Triton Central in the Hoosier Legends Conference, where they also compete with Indian Creek, Speedway, Beech Grove and Monrovia.
Head coach Jason Ward is 60-22 in his seventh year, winning three sectionals titles in the last four years.
Quarterback Jack Sorgi is fifth in the state (first in 3A) with 2,628 passing yards and 29 TDs. Wanson Hall leads the rushing with 525 yards and five scores, along with Carter Cummings (949), Jax Garver (685), Quinten Alexander (421) and Eli Morgan (350) have combined for 27 receiving touchdowns.
