Scott Ellis is a third-grade teacher at Sheridan Elementary School, and he has been mentoring and guiding young people for years.

Thirty years ago, Mr. Ellis started Cartoon Club. This simple idea has since grown into a beloved Sheridan tradition. Since its first meeting, more than 800 student artists have participated. Because this club is so popular, there is a required application in order to be involved. Every year, around 100 students apply, and those that get in are completely up to chance. A name drawing after applications are submitted determines who gets a spot.
Students want to join Cartoon Club not only because they get to spend time with the amazing Mr. Ellis, but also because the club encourages them to use their creativity and individuality. For many, it is an opportunity to be part of a group where imagination and artistry are the focus.
At each meeting, students select an artist and spend the time drawing between two to four of their characters. Sometimes they revisit classic and old school cartoonists, such as Warner Brothers, Jim Davis, and Walt Disney. But, sometimes they choose more current artists or whatever the students are currently enjoying.
Over the three decades, Cartoon Club has provided a space where students can explore their imagination and creativity, while making friends and building confidence. Teacher sponsor, Scott Ellis reflected, “I have really enjoyed it and will miss it when I retire.”
But don’t worry, retirement for Mr. Ellis isn’t coming any time soon. His devotion to students and Sheridan Community Schools does not go unnoticed and remains as strong as ever.
