Hamilton Southeastern kicked its way past Avon 17-14 Friday, Sept. 5 at Everwise Credit Union Field to begin Hoosier Crossroads Conference play on a winning note.
The Royals scored first, with Andrew Babb punching in his only rush for the game into the end zone from the one-yard line. Luke Marchionni made the first of his two extra-point kicks to give Southeastern a 7-0 lead.
Avon tied the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass with a minute left in the first half. The Royals responded right away: Terry Walker III sent a 76-yard TD pass to Kendrick Pennybaker. Marchionni’s kick put HSE up 14-7 at the break.
The Orioles tied the game again early in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown run. Avon stopped the Royals’ next drive, but Southeastern got the ball back after Drake Satterfield recovered a fumble on the punt return. The Royals made their way down to the Orioles’ 10-yard line, and Marchionni made a 27-yard field goal for what would be the game-winning score.
Walker finished the game 9-of-16, totaling 114 yards, with Pennybaker making three of those catches for 81 yards.
Southeastern is 3-0 and travels to Fishers this Friday for the Mudsock game.
