No. 13 Columbus North Bulldogs (3-1) at No. 5 Carmel Greyhounds (3-1)
Carmel and Columbus North have met just twice on the gridiron. The Greyhounds have won both times with the last time being the home and season opener 27-7 on Aug. 17, 2012. The ‘Hounds dominated the Bulldogs in the opener in Columbus on Aug. 19, 2011, 58-17.
North snapped its three-game winning streak at Roncalli last week, 41-20 to the Royals. In the first three games, the Bulldogs dominated Whiteland, Columbus East and Southport by a combined score of 155-14.
The Greyhounds started the first third of the season on a mission. A convincing win at Fishers (49-24) and then home wins over Westfield (34-10) and Centerville (Ohio) 48-0 gave Carmel confidence heading into their trip to Louisville.
Last week, Carmel got down but battled back. Trinity scored first, but the Greyhounds responded when Anthony Coellner threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Sell.
Throughout the rest of the first half, the Shamrocks outscored the ‘Hounds 24-7 heading to halftime. Coellner hit Dominic Shockley with a 65-yard touchdown for a 34-14 deficit.
Carmel got a third period score from Shockley again from Coellner. Ayden Johnson ran in the final score, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome Trinity’s 24-point second quarter.
Coellner passed 18 of 28 for 236 yards and three TDs. Andrew Pemberton rushed 14 times for 120 yards and Shockley caught five of Coellner’s passes for 98 yards.
Zionsville Eagles (1-3, 0-2 HCC) at Noblesville Millers (1-3, 0-2 HCC)
Tomorrow night’s game at Beaver Stadium is Homecoming for the Millers. Zionsville head coach Scott Turnquist and Noblesville head coach John Hebert reunite. They were assistants together at Carmel and most recently met up in the sectional last year when Turnquist’s Eagles edged Hebert and Carmel on a last second score, 29-28.
For the 27th time, the Eagles and Millers get together on the football field. Zionsville has won 20 of those to Noblesville’s six.
Noblesville has won two of the last three and each has won three in the last six meetings, including playoffs. Last year’s regular season game was won by Zionsville, 35-28.
Zionsville started off with a solid season-opener at home over Pike, 27-7. Since then, they’ve lost three consecutive at Lawrence Central (40-30) and have themselves sitting at 0-2 in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference with losses to Westfield (27-3) and at Franklin Central (20-16).
The Millers followed the same trend with a season-opening win at Mt. Vernon, 21-6. Since that point, they lost narrowly to Homestead (13-10) in the home opener and followed with two lopsided losses to start HCC play against two top 10 opponents in No. 6 Fishers (42-17) and No. 4 Westfield (41-7).
Noblesville’s defense allowed 14, 13 and 14 points in the first three quarters on the road at Westfield and unfortunately were searching for positives for the majority of the night as the Rocks overwhelmed the Millers, 41-7.
The Millers were able to get a touchdown on the board with 2:00 left in the ball game when quarterback Windsor Hutchins threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Nick Morris.
Hutchins completed 5 of 6 pass attempts. Luke Hile was the leading rusher with 52 yards and Noah Shinkle had 32.
