CARMEL – Believe it or not, Indiana high school soccer sectionals are two weeks away.
Tuesday’s boys soccer game between Class 3A No. 5 Carmel and 3A No. 14 Noblesville at the Greyhounds’ Murray Stadium could very well be a preview, since the two teams both play in Sectional 9, which the Millers will host the week of Oct. 6. There was no winner on Tuesday, as the teams played to a 1-1 tie in a well-played and predictably intense game.
“Every time we play Noblesville, it’s intense and it’s gotten more intense over the years,” said Carmel Shane Schmidt, who has been the head coach of the Greyhounds team since 2007.
The Greyhounds scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute. Gavin Fleming put a header into the net and Carmel held a 1-0 lead through halftime.
“It takes a lot of teamwork,” said Fleming. “It’s hard to keep that lead.”
The Hounds tried to stay ahead, but the Millers scored the equalizer with 17:22 left in the second half. Sam Kattman took the ball down the field and kicked it into the net from about five yards.
Noblesville coach Thomas Doering gave credit to “everybody that came off the bench,” noting that those players changed the energy of the game.
“They brought energy and made a difference,” said Doering.
The game was Senior Night for the Greyhounds, who are 8-1-3 and have three road contest left on their schedule. Carmel plays at New Palestine on Thursday, travels to 3A No. 1 Harrison Tuesday, Sept. 30 and finishes the regular season Thursday, Oct. 2 at 3A No. 11 Hamilton Southeastern.
The Millers are 7-3-3 and have two home games left on their regular-season schedule. Noblesville hosts Center Grove on Thursday and finishes Hoosier Crossroads Conference play Tuesday, Sept. 30 against Franklin Central.
