People are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero to show their support for people struggling with mental illness who are making the brave choice to work on improving their physical and mental health. There will also be family-friendly activities including a bounce house, face painting, caricature artists and food by the Latin Griller. Children age 5 and under are free to attend.
InSHAPE is Aspire’s fitness and wellness program designed to improve health, wellbeing, and longevity for individuals experiencing serious mental illness (SMI). It pairs them with health mentors who use education, exercise, fitness, nutrition, and community engagement to help individuals address issues such as losing weight, improving cognitive functions, decreasing depression and anxiety, improving self-esteem, and decreasing social isolation.
Adults with mental illness have higher mortality rates due to a combination of factors including physical health issues, lifestyle choices and social determinants of health. In addition to a mental illness diagnosis, they often face accompanying challenges of poor physical health and chronic conditions.
Funds raised from the Fun Run will go toward gym memberships, clothing, race registrations, and exercise equipment for InSHAPE clients.
