As winter wanes and signs of spring start to bloom, Nickel Plate Express (NPX) is kicking off its 2026 season with a full schedule of train rides. The lineup includes returning favorites along with several new themed experiences designed for families, trivia lovers, and those simply looking for a unique night out.
The Easter Express returns March 28 and 29 and April 3. This 75-minute train ride features a lighthearted story with the Easter Bunny and a stowaway farmer searching for his missing eggs. Guests can enjoy bunny punch and bunny grahams while taking in the spring scenery along the historic route.
Reading lovers can also look forward to the return of Read and Ride experiences throughout March and April. These relaxed evening rides invite guests to bring a favorite book, settle into comfortable coach seating, and unwind aboard the vintage train. Most rides will take place on Friday evenings, with a few select Saturdays available as well.
“Read and Ride has been one of my favorite experiences we offer,” Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad Executive Director Emily Reynolds said. “As an avid reader who believes in the importance of youth literacy, I have loved seeing hundreds of readers onboard this year. It is also a simple way to support mental well-being, because it gives people a chance to relax, unwind, and take a real break from technology while enjoying the feel of traveling on a classic 1950s train.”
For those who prefer a little friendly competition, trivia nights are back. Fan favorites such as Gilmore Girls Trivia return this spring, joined by new themes including Schitt’s Creek Trivia. These interactive evenings combine pop culture, teamwork, and the nostalgic setting of classic dining cars for a lively and memorable experience.
A highlight of the season takes place on April 26 when NPX celebrates its iconic 1953 Nickel Plate Road No. 426 locomotive. To mark the occasion, $5 caboose rides will run throughout the day from the Forest Park depot in Noblesville into downtown Noblesville and back. The special pricing offers the community an accessible way to experience a short excursion behind this historic engine.
The spring season concludes with two rides inspired by food, culture, and community. Fiesta on the Rails offers a family-friendly celebration featuring Lotería, churros, horchata, and a hands-on craft. Agave Express provides an adults-only evening with light snacks and a guided tequila tasting.
“Our team had a lot of fun designing these new experiences,” NPX Events Director Camden Oslund said. “Fiesta on the Rails is all about bringing families together for something playful, interactive, and full of flavor, while Agave Express is a great option for adults who want a relaxed evening with something a little different than the usual night out.”
