Editor’s note: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is being partially funded during November as the government shutdown continues. Benefits will reportedly be 50 percent of what a person normally receives, and as this goes to press, there is no solid information on when recipients will receive their November payment.
Hamilton County has a rich history of helping neighbors in need during difficult times. Among other things, there are food banks across the county and ample opportunities to help keep them stocked through fundraising events and direct donations. Today, The Reporter highlights the “Tackling Hunger Together” initiative, a good-natured competition between Carmel and Westfield.
In the spirit of community and friendly competition, the mayors and city councilors of Carmel and Westfield have teamed up to launch a charitable challenge supporting Hamilton County Harvest (HCH) Food Bank.
Inspired by the upcoming much-anticipated football matchup between the Carmel Greyhounds and the Westfield Shamrocks, the cities are going head-to-head to see who can raise the most funds to fight hunger.

Finkam
Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam and Westfield Mayor Scott Willis jointly created the “Tackling Hunger Together” challenge, inviting residents, businesses, and fans to show their team spirit not only in the stands but also through generosity and compassion. Every dollar raised will go directly to HCH Food Bank, helping to provide nutritious meals for families in need across Hamilton County.
“This is about turning rivalry into unity,” Mayor Finkam said. “No matter which team wins on the field, both communities can be proud to stand together in the fight against hunger.”

Willis
Mayor Willis agreed, adding, “We all want bragging rights, but the real victory is making sure no one in our community goes hungry. Let’s prove that teamwork extends far beyond the game.”
Donations can be made directly at Tackling Hunger Together: Carmel vs. Westfield, where contributors can designate their gift for either Team Carmel or Team Westfield. The winning team – determined by total funds raised – will be announced on Monday, Nov. 10, with all proceeds benefitting the food bank’s vital hunger relief programs.
The Tackling Hunger Together Challenge runs through Sunday, Nov. 9, and every contribution, large or small, helps make a meaningful difference.
